Earlier this month, we featured the badass owner-type jeep drawing attention in the US car scene. We only chanced upon the vehicle via world-renowned motoring photographer Larry Chen’s Instagram stories, and we took it upon ourselves to contact its owner, Joel Tan.
Tan—a Filipino car nut currently based in California—shared with us his story. He started his build in 2017 and fitted it with a SR20DET engine, and he’s since been visited by none other than Liberty Walk’s very own Kato-san, who wanted to check out his ride.
Anyway, let’s turn back to Larry Chen for a bit. The dude is a heavyweight in the car community, and has been associated with everyone from Speedhunters to Hoonigan. The latter is why Chen has shared Tan’s ride on his social-media profile. Check it out:
As you can see, Hoonigan has featured Joel Tan’s slammed owner-type on its Hoonigan Bonus YouTube channel. To see a local motoring icon like this being featured on a platform like Hoonigan is crazy stuff—and to have Larry Chen take one out for a canyon run is even crazier.
When you manage to steal the attention of one of the world’s top car photographers, you know you’re doing something right. Chen has nothing but praise for Tan’s ride: “Thank you so much for bringing this car for us to shoot today,” he tells Tan in the video.
“I’ve only heard about it, but I’ve never actually seen pictures of it,” Chen shares. “I just seriously nearly fell on the floor when I saw it. It’s just so crazy. From the rear, I can’t even tell what it is. I didn’t even know what it was.”
What makes this story even better? Chen is totally digging how owner-type jeeps have a huge following here in the Philippines.
Anyway, just watch the video to see what we’re talking about. To all the haters out there, you will never see owner-type jeeps as chipipay or jologs again after watching this baby in action. Everyone give Tan a round of applause for an amazing build.
