Metallica’s James Hetfield loves cars. Any fan of the thrash-metal band, even a casual one, would know all about Papa Het’s beloved pastime. Hell, he even penned a song dedicated to his love of cars and driving fast, albeit during the much-maligned Load/Reload era. If you ever played Hot Wheels Turbo Racing as a kid, then it probably sounds familiar:
Hetfield is a particular kind of car guy. You see, the frontman and rhythm guitarist loves customizing hot rods and pushing them to their limits, and finds the anonymity of being on the road to be therapeutic. In the Metallica: Some Kind of Monster documentary, there’s even a funny scene where he drives an obnoxiously loud ride that captures the attention of local policemen. Wherever he may roam, right?
Fans of both Hetfield’s cars and music can check out his custom rides up close at the end of the month at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection will take place on January 30, and will showcase Hetfield’s rides along with some of his signature ESP guitars that will go up for auction. The man himself will also be available for a fireside chat.
If you happen to be in Los Angeles when the event takes place, then nothing else matters. No need to go scanning the scene in the city that night. What are you waiting for? Come crawling. Faster, preferably.
