Arguably at the top of tourist-y things Pinoys do when in San Francisco is snap a pic with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background—a vibe that US-based artist Toro y Moi served up when he dropped the cover art for his latest album MAHAL. Yup, the Filipino and African-American artist is bringing his Pinoy roots to the forefront in his latest drop! And to one-up all the Golden Gate Bridge pics out there, he brought in an ultra-colorful Philippine jeepney and his signature chill sounds, too.
Chazwick Bundick, aka Chaz Bear, aka Toro y Moi, shared the cover of his seventh studio album MAHAL on social media on January 27. Pics were taken by NYC photographer Chris Maggio. You can spot the artist chilling on the driver’s seat of a brightly colored jeepney with the Golden Gate Bridge right behind—talk about two different worlds coming together.
If you didn’t already get it from the album title and cover, MAHAL takes its cue from the artist’s Filipino experience, combining that with commentary on our relationship with tech. “Okay, cool. What about the jeep specifically though?” you might be asking. As Bandwagon Asia reports, the forthcoming album’s sounds are an exploration of what you hear while on board the Philippines’ king of the road. If you’re wondering how Toro y Moi's eclectic-chill vibe and the um, very unique experience of riding a Pinoy jeepney will intersect, then check out the first two tracks from the album.
Toro y Moi dropped tracks ‘Postman’ and ‘Magazine,’ with the latter featuring vocals from Salami Rose Joe Louis. The jeepney pops up again in the trippy ‘Postman’ video, which is set in the Golden City and peppered with nostalgic Pinoy imagery—including an animated segment of the jeepney flying over what looks like a street in the Philippines. Chaz Bear mentions his Filipino mom in the lyrics, too.
Vibe out to the bass-heavy track below:
