The first Mazda CX-5 made its global debut over six years ago. At the time, it was a giant leap ahead of the Escape-based Tribute. It proudly flaunted its Kodo styling and everyone fell in love with it.

It was a legitimately desirable compact SUV oozing with style. Fast forward a few years later, and Korean marques began showing off new-gen offerings like the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. To stay ahead, the Japanese carmaker finally revealed the all-new CX-5, which took everything good about the first one and even made it better.

1) Premium flavor

The CX-5 combines the best of Japanese, Italian, and German looks. Its version 2.0 Kodo design is now sharper, sleeker and more premium than its predecessor. Style-wise, this vehicle can even outclass some luxury-branded SUVs. It's the same story inside, where it flaunts a neatly laid out dashboard with quality materials and attention to detail like stitched soft-touch surfaces.

2) Choice of power

You get three impressive engines to choose from: a 2.0-liter gasoline mill that produces 153hp and 200Nm; a 2.5-liter gasoline motor that has 185hp and 251Nm; and 2.2-liter diesel that churns out 173hp and 420Nm. All powerplants are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The base model gets front-wheel drive, while the other two variants get standard all-wheel drive.

3) Features galore

For safety, all variants get six airbags, ABS and EBD, and stability control. The top-of-the-line model gets Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Monitoring, and Lane Keep Assist. To improve fuel efficiency, it comes with an i-Stop start/stop system--useful when you're stuck in Metro Manila's infamous traffic. On the tech side, its infotainment system has a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth capability as standard. All-wheel-drive variants get a cool heads-up display, too.

4) Zoom-Zoom handling

Like its other siblings, the CX-5 is also injected with fun-to-drive characteristics that the Japanese brand is known for. Thanks to its lighter, more rigid construction and chassis-tuning, this compact SUV now has even sharper handling.

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is priced from P1,650,000 to P2,200,000. Not bad, considering what you're getting. If you're looking for a stylish and sporty compact SUV, you might want to consider this as an option.
