The Porsche Taycan just did 164kph indoors for a new Guinness World Record

Can you imagine driving this fast inside any building?

Believe it or not, there’s an official Guinness World Record for the fastest speed achieved by a vehicle...indoors. It sounds dangerous and just downright bananas, but also a lot of fun, too. Look away, mothers who told us not to ride our bikes and pedal cars inside the house.

Anyway, the previous record of 138kph (86mph)—which stood for seven years—was recently broken by the Porsche Taycan. With racer Leh Keen behind the wheel, the Taycan Turbo S was able to reach 164kph (102mph). Indoors. Let that sink in.

And yeah, pulling it off was as difficult as it sounds. Guinness had laid down some strict rules: The record attempt should begin from and finish at a complete standstill, all within the space of the selected building. That means there’s no proper run-up, no safety net, and no doors for a possible safe exit.

The building of choice was the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. It has the largest contiguous exhibit hall in the US at just over one million square feet, which was more than enough space for such a bonkers record attempt.

“I did take a moment on the starting line—knowing I was going to have to go as fast as I could, and stop again, all before reaching the wall I was facing. It got my attention,” shared Keen. “I used the car’s launch control and the Taycan just hooked up. The sensation of speed indoors, even in such a big space, is enormous—that wall rushed up fast.”

“Of course, I didn’t look down at my speed so it came as a surprise and a relief that I’d beaten the record, and by such a margin,” he added. “It was a rush! I’m thankful for Porsche for trusting my abilities and for their preparations and encouragement—102mph inside a building. What was I thinking?”

This isn’t the first Guinness World Record the Taycan has set. A few months back, Chris Harris set the record for the longest drift in an electric vehicle when he drove the Taycan sideways for a 3.4km...but then Dutch driver Dennis Retera broke the record almost immediately after by managing 42.171km of purely sideways running. Yep, he was drifting that car for a full 55 minutes.
