In case you’ve been living under a rock, Honda released the all-new Brio last month—you can also check out our first drive impressions story on that. It’s relatively affordable for its badge, but how does it fare in a bang-for-your-buck segment?

We’ve chosen to pit the Honda Brio 1.2 S M/T against the Toyota Wigo 1.0 G M/T. The two cars are not only similar in size, shape, and roots, but are also very much within the same price range.

On the one hand, we have the all-new Brio packing a 1.2-liter in-line-four that produces 89hp and 110Nm of torque. On the other, we have the ever-so-handy Wigo with its 1.0-liter straight-three generating 65hp and 89Nm of torque. The Brio is slightly bigger, with a heavier curb weight of 954kg compared with the Wigo’s 840kg.

Apart from these differences, the two Japanese hatchbacks are basically identical on paper. The one other difference is in pricing: only P4,000 separates the two, with the Toyota coming in at P581,000 versus the Honda at P585,000.
