Planning on visiting Japan once it’s finally safe to do so? If yes, chances are Universal Studios Japan might be part of your itinerary. You know, on account of the kids. This has nothing to do with you wanting to try out Super Nintendo World’s soon-to-open Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge ride.
We hit the nail on the head, didn’t we? Yeah, we’re excited to experience it, too. It was supposed to open last week, but this didn’t push through on account of COVID-19. Some lucky people were, however, treated to a special preview of the ride, which uses augmented reality (AR) technology to bring one of the world’s most beloved racing games to life.
You can watch a full 20-minute tour of the ride, including what it’s like to stand in line for it, in the video below.

All right, all right. Before you get to bashing, know that AR is going to look a hell of a lot different when you’re actually in the ride than when you’re watching it on YouTube. Remember: You’re supposed to be wearing special AR goggles during the ride. Whoever filmed this simply recorded the whole thing through a smartphone.
There are plenty of other attractions to check out at Super Nintendo World besides Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, including Yoshi’s Adventure and some neat Mario-themed shopping and dining establishments. Are you as excited as we are to visit when it’s safe to travel again?
