The Ariel Hipercar packs an electric motor in each of its wheels and…a jet engine?

Yes, you read that right

If you’re naming your vehicle the ‘Hipercar,’ you damn hell better hope it lives up to the moniker. Thankfully, for Ariel’s creation here, it doesn’t just look the part but drives like it as well.

Top Gear’s Ollie Marriage recently got behind the Hipercar’s wheel to see how worthy the thing is of its creator’s choice of name. With almost 1,200hp on tap courtesy of four electric motors (one per wheel), we wouldn’t recommend betting against it—even in the relatively raw state of development it’s in.

“Okay, it’s a very raw prototype, but it does have the full whack of power,” Marriage says as he zips around inside the Hipercar on a tarmac surrounded by the vehicle’s bare cabin.

Oh, and did we mention it packs a het engine, too? It’s apparent from the rear of the car. But before you get any crazy ideas, it only produces about 34hp and serves as a range extender for the vehicle’s 56kwh battery pack.

There’s a lot to take in here, so you’re better off watching Marriage’s full impressions of the Ariel Hipercar in the 15-minute clip up there. It looks like quite something to be behind the wheel of. What do you think this thing will look like in its final form?
