A lot of drivers these days are obsessed with the amount of cupholders their car has. In fact, we don't think it's a stretch to say that some purchases are sealed based on the cupholder count. Ford seems to know this, and is doing everything it can to stay ahead of its competition storage-wise.
The American carmaker has come up with an innovative transformable cupholder based on an all-new patent it recently secured. Set in between the front seats, the new cupholder design consists of two parts: a combination cupholder, and a storage bin with an open upper portion that slides back and forth from left to right.
The latter allows occupants to have two extra drink holders by simply sliding the panel to the left. This reveals the extra pair of drink barrel holders. When not in use, the extra pair can be slid back to the right. This, in turn, will give additional storage space without compromising aesthetics or functionality.
The new cupholder design will make its industry debut in the 2017 Ford Super Duty pickup truck. With the new contraption, Ford has upped the cupholder count to 10--for what is essentially a five-seat truck. While this may seem frivolous, we all know that people out on the open road or those stuck in horrendous rush-hour gridlock need to hydrate. This is why the more cupholders your car has, the better.
Sure, the new Ford drink holders may only be seen in the Super Duty for now--which isn’t sold in our market anyway--but knowing Ford, this feature could soon appear in its other vehicles down the line. In the meantime, let’s get a load of how the thing works via this short video. It's pretty cool.
