Every day, riders are literally exposed to danger on the road. BMW Motorrad, together with Alpinestars, hopes to remedy this by introducing a cool new innovation that could potentially save countless lives.
The BMW Motorrad Street Air Dry by Alpinestars is essentially a jacket with a built-in airbag system. It uses the Alpinestars Tech-Air airbag mechanism and takes it a step further. It works via a series of sophisticated algorithms to detect imminent danger. Think of it as a motion sensor that can tell when a crash is about to take place. This sends a trigger for the airbag to inflate.
Unlike the inflatable protector in your car, however, this one doesn’t need to be mounted anywhere on the bike. In fact, you don’t need to attach it to your two-wheeler. Both driver and passenger simply need to put on the jacket and vest to make it work. The sensors will, er, sense the proximity of the body to make it ready for any untoward incident. This means you can switch between different bikes and still have that layer of safety.
To fully use the system and its benefits, the BMW Motorrad Air Dry must be paired with the Alpinestars Airbag vest. This allows for maximum cover for the shoulders, back, kidneys and chest, which are the parts most vulnerable during a mishap. Moreover, it will also deploy during those times when you’re sitting and waiting for the traffic light to turn green, yet unfortunately some reckless motorist hits you from behind.
The airbag jacket/vest system can protect you whether you’re cruising on the highway or exploring some scenic off-road trails. It won’t cramp your style, in other words.
The BMW Motorrad Air Dry by Alpinestars will be available beginning this October. While it is a really amazing piece of kit, we just hope it won’t encourage hooliganism among riders who think that they’re immune to crashes. We have enough crazy and insensitive motorcyclists out there as it is.
