Modern cars are cool and all, don’t get us wrong. But there’s a certain appeal that comes with driving a classic nameplate. Maybe it’s because of the nostalgic feelings they evoke, or their Instragam-worthy curves, or the admiration you get from fellow car enthusiasts. It’s the same thing with watches, really. Smartwatches might be technological marvels, but a well-constructed mechanical watch with an old-school vibe is equally as wonderful in our books.
Knowing full well the appeal of its classic timepieces, Seiko recently dropped this limited-edition recreation of its ’70s dive watch. The original is legendary not only for its then-unique design elements like the crown at the 4 0’clock position and the enlarged case, but it was also worn by adventurer Naomi Uemura during his 12,000km dog sled run from Greenland to Alaska.
The modern version captures the original’s essence while sporting a few key upgrades. It’s now water-resistant to 200m (compared to the original’s 150m), and the crystal which used to be made of hardlex now consists of sapphire with an anti-reflective coating. It’s also a bit bigger than the original at 45mm diameter.
Only 2,500 pieces of the Seiko SLA033J1 will be sold under the Prospex line. Would you fancy having this on your wrist?
