BMW has unveiled the R18 Classic and the updated R nineT range

Shortly after the release of the updated R1250 RT, BMW Motorrad has unveiled a slate of updated R nineT models and the R18 Classic.

First, the R nineT family—R nineT, R nineT Pure, R nineT Scrambler and R nineT Urban G/S—has received a few technical modifications, range extension of standard features, and design fine-tuning for the upcoming 2021 season.

Here’s what the bumf says: “When BMW Motorrad presented the R nineT in 2013, it was more than just a roadster modeled on a classic archetype: From the very outset, it combined classic motorcycle design and modern technology with excellent craftsmanship and a wide range of customisation options.”

Each model is equipped with a boxer engine according to EU-5 pollutant class requirements. Power output now peaks at 109hp at 7,250rpm (previously 110hp at 7,750rpm), while maximum torque is still 116Nm at 6,000rpm.

The combination of ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control ensures safety when braking and banking. Among standard features are the WAD spring element, Rain and Road riding modes, LED headlamp and white indicator lights, and a USB charging socket.

Part of Riding Modes Pro, the Dyna (for R nineT and R nineT Pure) and Dirt (R nineT Scrambler and R nineT Urban G/S) modes can now be selected individually. Design-wise, the exclusive Option 719 range of parts is available.

BMW Motorrad also revealed its historic follow-up in the cruiser segment: the BMW R18 Classic.

“The new BMW R18 Classic is a nostalgic touring bike that echoes the beginnings of the great touring cruiser models,” reads the official release. “While the R18 is very purist in style, the R18 Classic features a large windscreen, passenger seat, saddle bags, additional LED headlights and 16-inch front wheel.”

Armed with “the most powerful BMW boxer engine of all time” called the Big Boxer, the R18 Classic has peak output of 91hp at 4,750 rpm, with over 150Nm at 2,000-4,000rpm.

A double-loop steel tube frame highlights the suspension system by tradition, while the rear swinging-arm component is borrowed from the BMW R5. Suspension elements include a telescopic fork with fork sleeves, cantilever suspension strut, wire-spoked wheels, and disc brakes. Mid-mounted footpegs provide optimum vehicle control.

Just like the R18, the classic version has three standard riding modes: Rain, Roll, and Rock. It’s no secret that the R18 Classic is mainly influenced by the iconic boxer model, thus the old-school paint and bodywork.
