We can now say that the MT family of Yamaha Motor Philippines is complete with the arrival of the 2020 MT-03, the fifth member of the ‘Master of Torque’ lineup, on local shores.

First launched internationally in October last year, this latest version of the MT-03 has since earned positive reviews from riders around the world for its agile handling, easy-to-control power delivery, spirited performance, and awesome overall design package. It looks almost identical to its big brother, the MT-09, with its aggressive stance highlighted by the widened shoulders of the fuel tank and the side air scoops, which are basically only for aesthetics.

For 2020, the MT-03 has redesigned angled dual-LED headlamps to complement the MT lineup’s theme of ‘The Dark Side of Japan.’ This fixture replaces the single headlight from the previous version. Adding to its minimalist styling are LED turning lights and the sleek taillight that we see on the MT-07. What’s more, this lightweight naked bike boasts an all-digital instrument display that shows loads of information—tachometer, speedometer, oil and fuel meter, engine temperature gauge, and average/instant fuel-economy reading.

The MT-03 is actually the naked version of the track-oriented, fully-faired YZF-R3, as they share the same 321cc DOHC liquid-cooled, parallel-twin mill with a counterbalancer. This impressive powerplant generates 42hp and 29.6Nm of torque. It features carburized connecting rods, lightweight and heat-resistant forged pistons, and all-aluminum DiASil cylinders that provide excellent heat dissipation.

This latest iteration is now also equipped with a 37mm KYB inverted fork and a street-tuned preload-adjustable rear shock absorber. Tipping the scales at 169kg, the MT-03 is two pounds heavier than the R3.

Priced at P254,000, the 2020 Yamaha MT-03 is offered in two color schemes: Ice Fluo and Matte Raven Black.
