Lap after lap, ace underbone riders Clifford Bacus and Gian Carlo Mauricio battled wheel-to-wheel in pursuit of the championship title at the Suzuki Raider R150 One-Make Series during the Shell Advance Super Series Leg 4 held at the Carmona Race Track over the weekend.
But when the checkered flag was waved after the final lap, it was the 29-year-old Bacus who emerged victorious by exhibiting finesse and consistency in attacking the fast corners and successfully defending his line on the main straight of the 1km race track. Behind him were Mauricio and 13 other competitors.
Bacus, a native of Davao City and a recipient of the Golden Wheel Awards in 2013 for being the overall champion for 130cc Underbone Category, clocked a best time of 52.646. His fiercest rival, Mauricio, posted 52.908, which earned him the second place in a hairline finish behind the Davaoeño. Third on the podium was Kerwin Chang, who posted a best lap time of 53.784.
Despite securing pole position in the qualifying, Bacus was consistently under pressure from Mauricio, who snatched the lead from the Mindanaoan rider in several laps. But Bacus appeared more relentless in squeezing the throttle. Mauricio started second on the grid. Clifford and Gian Carlo touched each other at least twice at the tight turns, but the former always recovered to take the lead.
