Using a more realistic testing approach

In March 2018, jaws dropped when organizers of the Petron Safe Run, a fuel-economy run staged in Central and Northern Luzon, announced the results of the event.

Riding a Yamaha Sight 115, Robby Malapitan posted an astonishing 129km/L after traveling 200km through Pampanga, Bataan, La Union, Tarlac, and back to Pampanga. This fuel-economy figure bested those of 280 other big and small bikes in three different categories.

Because of this, the Yamaha Sight 115, known for its utilitarian features yet robust performance, made headlines. But when the smoke cleared, Yamaha Motor Philippines (YMPH) decided to have the result validated using a more realistic approach.

“Plenty of people were impressed, and some were skeptical about [the Yamaha Sight’s] performance. Such efficiency may be too good to be true, others would say. But Yamaha has never been known to blur the lines between fact and fiction,” the bike manufacturer said in a statement.

Away from media attention, YMPH is presently conducting the Yamaha Sight Safe Run, which comprises three qualifying events and a final leg. The goal is to determine the fuel economy of this hot-selling entry-level motorbike.

Being forever nosy for news, Moto Sapiens got reliable information that the inaugural run was successfully staged on October 14 in Davao City, with 10 Sight 115 owners participating. So, we sought an official statement from YMPH.

Davao-based dealers sponsored the 10 participants, who took off at Yamaha Rev Zone in Ulas, Davao City, and proceeded to do the 200km run with their fuel tanks sealed. When they reached the finish line, Michael Comahig led the fuel-economy rankings.

Riders who top the qualifying legs will participate in the final run on November 18 in Cagayan de Oro City. Locals can catch the kick-off proceedings at the Yamaha Rev Zone in Barangay Lapasan.

But what about Comahig’s fuel-economy result? Well, YMPH is still not disclosing the figure, which it will eventually release along with the other results after the final round. Let’s see if the numbers will, as the Yamaha slogan goes: Revs your heart.
