Aston Martin shakes down hydrogen-powered Rapide S

In four-hour Nurburgring race, no less

In preparation for its run at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance race in May, the hydrogen-powered Rapide S unveiled two weeks ago by Aston Martin ran in a four-hour ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN series race.

Although the car\'s participation in the race simply served as a shakedown and test session ahead of the grueling 24-hour race, it secured for Aston Martin a place in the history books as the car became the world\'s first hydrogen-fueled car to run a zero carbon dioxide emission lap of the 24km Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

When the Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S runs at the race, it will become not only the first hydrogen-powered car to compete in an international event,  but also the first zero carbon dioxide emission sports car to complete a race lap at the Nurburgring 24-hour race.

Aston Martin added that the car will compete in the experimental class after it passed the rigorous technical and safety assessment set by the German motorsport authority, the DMSB. It will also be able to complete full laps with zero carbon dioxide emissions and will be refueled after each stint with 3.5kg of hydrogen as well as gasoline.

\"I am incredibly proud of the Aston Martin team, and our partners Alset Global,\" said Aston Martin chief executive Ulrich Bez who, incidentally, also completed the car\'s run in the race. \"We have written a little motorsport history with this qualifying lap as well as finishing the four-hour race on hydrogen. Of course, it bodes extremely well for our participation in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in three weeks\' time. To have run full laps on hydrogen gas alone during the four-hour event is an exceptional first, and I now hope that we can stabilize the system and further improve the Rapide S so we can complete the 24-hour race on May 19 with many zero-emission laps.\"
