BMW is entering the four-door coupe market with the revelation of the third model in the 6-Series lineup: the 6-Series Gran Coupe.

A four-door coupe based on the BMW 6-Series, the Gran Coupe, according to BMW, sets a "new benchmark in the top-class premium segment in terms of aesthetics, emotionality and modernity."

The Gran Coupe's front end is unmistakably that of a 6-Series' although individual exterior features like the model-specific electroplated bars between the air intake and fog lamps and twin round headlights with three-dimensional light rings mark it as BMW's newest model.

Of course, what makes the Gran Coupe stand out are its distinctive silhouette with the flowing coupe-style roof line, the elegant take on the German carmaker's signature Hofmeister kink, the "Gran Coupe" lettering on the C-pillar, and the eye-catching rear emphasis on the width of the car that's accentuated by the LED taillights and the full-length third brake light above the rear window.

Completing the car's cabin trim are the flatscreen control display, the comfort-oriented rear seat backrest angle, a seating position that's slightly higher than in the 6-Series Coupe and Convertible, and the unrivalled range of BMW ConnectedDrive products. These include the BMW parking assistant, speed-limit info and the camera-based collision warning with braking function. It's also possible to increase the Gran Coupe's cargo-carrying capacity, thanks to the split/folding rear seat backrests that increases the boot's capacity from 460 to 1,265 liters.

Three powerplants will be available for the car with the flagship 650i Gran Coupe getting the direct injection, twin turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with an output of 450hp and 650Nm of twist. Following it is the 640i Gran Coupe with its direct injection, twin turbo 3.0-liter straight six that produces 320hp and 450Nm of torque. Lastly, there's the 640d Gran Coupe and its variable sequential turbocharged 3.0-liter CRDi mill that puts out 313hp and 630Nm of torque.

Regardless of engine, putting the power down to the Gran Coupe's rear wheels is an eight-speed sports automatic transmission with the driving experience control switch and BMW EfficientDynamics features like the auto start-stop function and ECO PRO mode coming as standard with all engine variants.
