The Ford Expedition is one of the more premium SUVs out there, with one of the most comfortable rides and spacious cabins in its segment—or any car segment on earth. It’s a car fit for an executive, no doubt, but some might forget that it’s still a 4x4 vehicle as well. Even with all its amenities, it can still get down and dirty in off-road situations.

In fact, Ford says that about 20% of Expedition owners use their vehicles to tackle tricky terrain themselves, be it fishing, hunting, or camping. This bad boy packs a familiar 375hp 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission under its hood. It has, however, off-road-tuned shock absorbers, an all-new electronic limited-slip rear differential, and seven underbody skid plates—including a sand shield for the turbocharger intercoolers, steel plates for the powertrain and transmission, and a full-length guard for the fuel tank. In addition to these, the vehicle’s approach angle has been improved by the shortened chin spoiler fitted under the front bumper. Last on the 4x4 package are the 18-inch metallic gray wheels fitted with 32-inch all-terrain tires

Despite all these off-road goodies, the FX4 remains pretty capable on-road, too, with a myriad safety and driver-assist technologies included in the Ford Co-Pilot360 that comes as standard. Drivers get to enjoy added features such as a 360-degree view camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot information, and lane-keeping systems among others. It also promises a premium cabin, too, with leather seats, wooden interior accents, and rubber floor liners for interior protection. Several FX4 badges have been plastered around the exterior as well to complete the look.

“There’s a growing trend in people looking to enjoy rugged terrain without having to give up the refinement, comfort or convenience of getting there,” said Ford Expedition consumer marketing manager Devin McParlane.
