It took a while, but it’s finally here: Kia has officially launched the all-new K5, known in our market as the Optima. We’ve already seen a lot of photos of this midsize sedan several months back, but now we finally get to see it in its final form.
As mentioned in our previous story, there will be multiple engine options available. Now that the next-generation model has been launched, we can confirm that it’ll be powered (at least in the US market) by either a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline direct-injection (T-GDi) engine capable of 290hp and 421Nm, or a 1.6-liter T-GDi that generates 180hp and 264Nm. The former is available in the top-spec GT variant and is mated to a new Kia-built eight-speed wet DCT, while the latter gets an eight-speed automatic transmission.
There’s an available all-wheel-drive setup with multiple drive modes. In addition, the upcoming K5 also comes loaded with a lot of extra features. It gets either an eight- or 10.25-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and which pumps out sound through a 12-speaker Bose setup. The bigger touchscreen display has wireless CarPlay and multi-connect Bluetooth capabilities, and is integrated with UVO Connected Routing.
Other noteworthy extra features here are the built-in wireless charging pad and the smart key with remote engine start and hands-free Smart Trunk functions. Meanwhile, safety and driver-assist features include forward-collision warning and avoidance assist, driver attention warning, lane-following assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, and rear cross-traffic collision assistance. It has also been equipped with a new navigation-based intelligent cruise control.
No word on pricing yet, but Kia says the new K5 will go on sale later in 2020. In the meantime, you can check out more photos below and tell us how you find the car. Do you think Kia Philippines should bring this in?
