We got our first look at the all-new Kia K5 when the carmaker released full images of the next-generation fastback sedan just a while back. Now, Kia has disclosed the full specifications of the vehicle formerly known as the Optima here in the Philippines, and we’ll be looking at said specs here.
While we do have details on what the new K5 will have inside its cabin, Kia has yet to reveal official images of the interior. The company says that the inside will sport a wide dashboard that will feature the brand’s next-generation design language. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster has been fitted here, complemented by an eight-inch heads-up display. A 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes as an option, while the sound is produced by a standard 12-speaker Bose setup. As for the upholstery, cloth, synthetic leather, and leather options are available, and these come in single- and two-tone color schemes depending on the market.
Under the hood, the new K5—at least in Korea and North America—gets a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline-direct injection (T-GDi) engine with maximum outputs of 178hp at 5,500rpm and 265Nm of torque at 1,500-4,500rpm. Other market-specific options include a 2.0-liter multi-point injection engine that generates 150hp and 192Nm, a 2.0-liter CVVL engine that peaks at 158hp and 196Nm, and a 2.5-liter GDi powerplant capable of 191hp and 246Nm of torque. Kia has also stated that hybrid powertrain options will be available, but has yet to reveal details about these systems as of writing.
In the North American market, a K5 GT variant will be available, and this will be powered by a high-performance 2.5-liter T-GDi engine that produces 286hp and 422Nm of torque. This powertrain allows the K5 GT to do 0-100kph in 6.6 seconds.
These engines are mated to either a six- or eight-speed automatic transmission, with an eight-speed wet DCT option exclusive for the 2.5-liter T-GDi. For the first time ever in the K5, the 2020 model will also come with an optional new all-wheel-drive system. A Drive Mode Select system is also available; the drive modes include ‘Smart,’ ‘Comfort,’ ‘Eco,’ ‘Sport,’ and ‘Custom.’
The new K5 also comes with a myriad of safety and driver-assist features, headlined by the new Remote Smart Parking Assist. This allows drivers to move their cars forward into a parking slot and back out of it using only the key fob. Nine airbags, vehicle stability management, and electronic stability control come standard across the range.
The K5 also offers what Kia calls ‘level two’ autonomous driving technology. This is the new lane-following assist feature, which uses cameras to monitor road markings and controls steering depending on the vehicles in front.
“With a fastback design, the new K5 is one of the sportiest cars that we have ever created; with its comprehensive range of cutting-edge technologies, revised engines and transmissions, and a luxurious new interior, it’s also one of the most advanced,” said Kia Motors Corporation product division head Thomas Schemera.
