The future of Hyundai’s EVs is here: Say hello to the new Ioniq 5, the first-ever vehicle to debut under the Korean carmaker’s new sub-brand.
We got a glimpse at the Ioniq 5 at the start of the year, and now Hyundai has finally revealed the new EV in its full production form. Frankly, its styling is far more futuristic than that of any other vehicle the company has ever built.
It still looks like a concept, with a retro-meets-modern kind of styling. Sharp, minimal lines and classy, boxy lights adorn both front and rear ends. The overall design pays homage to the Pony, Hyundai’s first-ever production car.
It’s not all about style, though, as the vehicle has been shaped with aero in mind. From the bigger details like the clamshell hood to the smaller ones like the door handles, the Ioniq 5 is all about enhancing aerodynamic efficiency.
The interior, meanwhile, is designed similarly to the exterior, with a clean, minimalist theme. A pair of large displays are mounted on the dash, while the majority of the cabin is covered in white leather with a few gray accents around.
There’s also a movable center console called the Universal Island that allows for better movement inside the vehicle. This adjustable interior, along with the electrically adjustable front seats, embodies what Hyundai calls the ‘Living Space’ theme.
Of course, the Ioniq 5 also impresses in terms of performance. It’s built on Hyundai’s new battery electric vehicle platform and can be spec’d with either a 58kWh or a 72.6kWh battery pack and various electric motor layouts. With the bigger battery and AWD, the EV boasts a combined maximum output of 302hp and 605Nm of torque.
With 2WD and the 72.6kWh battery, the EV can achieve a claimed maximum range of 480km on a single charge. That’s the most economical of the bunch, just to give an idea of what this EV can do.
The Ioniq 5 also supports ultra-fast charging. With a 350kW charger, the vehicle only needs five minutes to recharge for up to 100km of range, and it can also charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
Hyundai’s newest EV is also equipped with a host of added tech such as Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), forward and blind-spot collision avoidance assist, high-beam assist, driver attention warning, and intelligent speed-limit assist. There’s also an augmented reality head-up display (AR HUD) to boot.
“Ioniq 5 will accommodate lifestyles without limits, proactively caring for customers’ needs throughout their journey,” said Hyundai executive vice president and global chief marketing officer Thomas Schemera. “It is truly the first electric vehicle to provide a new experience with its innovative use of interior space and advanced technologies.”
