Volkswagen has just unveiled its new small SUV for the American market, the Taos. With this one, VW takes things down a notch—specifically in terms of size—and takes aim at entry-level consumers.

The Taos is no doubt a stylish SUV, with a sporty front fascia clad boasting a good mix of chrome and black and gray plastic bits. The black accent on the front continues on to the sides and the back, and along with the 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, these elements give the vehicle a more macho appeal. There’s nothing spectacular about the rear end, but there’s also nothing to complain about here.

Inside, the Taos gets a two-tone finish. Stitched gray leather provides contrast to the black dashboard, with the overall effect being understated but modern. The seats get the same black-and-gray color scheme, while more soft-touch materials can be found on the tiller and the door panels.

Under the hood, the Taos packs a 1.5-liter turbocharged in-line-four that generates 158hp and 249Nm. This is mated to an eight-speed automatic in FWD variants, while AWD versions get a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Other added features in the Taos include an eight-inch touchscreen, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, rain-sensing wipers, a heated leatherette steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated side mirrors and washer nozzles. Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit and its Car-Net with in-car Wi-Fi capability are also available across the range.

Safety features such as forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, a blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, and lane-keep assist also come as standard. Higher trims get you added niceties including the MIB3 infotainment system with wireless charging and wireless App-Connect, 10-color ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio sound setup.

The Taos is set to go on sale in 2021. What do you think of it? Would you like to see this on local roads? Check out more photos of it below and sound off in the comments.
