BMW recently gave its 1-Series model a boost in terms of looks, engines and equipment. The midlife refresh comes just in time, as the current F20-generation 1-Series has been on sale since late 2011.
The exterior tweaks are especially welcome, since some people thought the original 1-Series face looked like a character in Angry Birds. This time, the kidney grille and the air intakes have been redesigned to keep the car more in line with the familiar, handsome BMW aesthetic. The headlights are flatter, and now come with LED DRLs as standard, with a full LED setup now an option.
The taillights have also been updated. They now sport the current 'L-shaped' look that’s present in current Bimmers, and are also LED-powered.
Inside, BMW extended Christmas by equipping all new 1-Series variants with standard automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, BMW Radio Professional kit, and iDrive. The latter comes with a 6.5-inch high-resolution display positioned above the instrument panel. Tire-pressure monitoring is also not just an option now. In the past, these features were only available as options, or as part of the higher variants.
A BMW refresh wouldn’t be complete without improving the engines, an area where the German carmaker excels. As expected, emissions and fuel consumption have likewise been improved. One highlight is the new 116d Efficient Dynamics edition that has a three-cylinder diesel engine with TwinPower Turbo technology. This 116d is said to be capable of averaging 29km/L in fuel economy, with a top speed of 195kph.
On the performance side, the M135i gets a power nudge, upping its output to 326hp. This allows it to reach 0-100kph in just 4.9 seconds with the automatic gearbox, all the way to a maximum velocity of 250kph.
Rounding out the updates are new options like the radar-based Active Cruise Control and the latest-generation Parking Assistant, which can now parallel-park in tight spaces as well as perform automatic transverse parking.
With its new standard features and its handsome makeover, the 1-Series will surely be in a better position to compete in its segment. We’re excited for its official arrival in our market.
