Since its introduction in 1976, the Honda Accord has been steadily moving up in terms of size and features. Starting life out as a compact hatch (can you imagine?), the Accord has evolved into a midsize sedan. It has even spawned coupe versions in markets like the US. The evolution has likewise seen the car become more high-tech over the years.
That evolution continues with the latest iteration of the Accord getting a slew of premium features that make it one of the most tech-laden models in the midsize class. The 2016 Accord—a face-lifted version of the current-gen model--will now come with such niceties as a better safety package, upgraded amenities, and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Debuting in the world’s technology capital, Silicon Valley, the new Accord’s Honda Sensing safety suite includes a collision mitigation braking system with forward-collision warning, road-departure mitigation with lane-departure warning, lane-keep assistance, and adaptive cruise control. Apart from these, the new Accord also comes with a multi-angle rearview camera--like in our market--and extended-view driver-side mirror. The safety suite is rounded out with available auto high beam system for the utmost in driving safety, whatever the road conditions.
While safety is the top priority, Honda knows that drivers nowadays have to stay connected while on the road. Thus, they loaded the Accord with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity--a first for the mainstream automaker. Controlled by either a new seven-inch touchscreen or steering-wheel controls, this allows drivers to easily sync their Apple or Android phones to the car. They can call, text and use various apps without taking their hands off the wheel and their eyes off the road. It’s like making the car a moving mobile phone.
On the facelift part, the new Accord gets new exterior styling tweaks like restyled front and rear bumpers, a new front grille, and available 19-inch alloy wheels. It even gets a new aluminum hood with more pronounced creases for a sportier and more upscale look.
Set to go on sale in North America beginning this August, the 2016 Honda Accord is once again poised to set the benchmark for the class. Hopefully, these tasteful updates trickle down to our market, too.
