Daihatsu’s 2021 Tokyo Auto Salon lineup makes us miss Japan’s car scene even more

These kei-car concepts are utterly crazy but completely lovable

Great news! The Tokyo Auto Salon may be going virtual this year, but thankfully our old pals at Daihatsu have lost none of their creative spirit. Click these blue words if you’re not sure what we’re talking about.

That link was the carmaker’s lineup of concepts for the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon, and the images here are 2021’s. Together, the set is called ‘Daihatsu Village Colorful Carnival,’ because of course it is!

Daihatsu Hijet Truck - Tokyo Auto Salon

Aren’t these little kei cars all incredible? The first and surely the most bonkers is the Hijet Sporza, which is based on the Hijet delivery van but has been turned into a ridiculously cool kei-speedster-ute thing. Want.

The second is the Copen Spyder, which uses the supremely cool Copen Cero’s retro body panels and once again chops off the roof and uses a speedster-style windshield. There’s a set of Volk Racing wheels to complete the look, too.

Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo Camper - Tokyo Auto Salon

It’s not all sport and speedsters though—there’s proper lifestyle as well. The Hijet Jumbo Camper has a bed, LED lights and a safari rack, whilst the Taft Crossfield is a boxy kei-SUV that we can definitely get on board with.

Last but not least, there’s the brilliantly named Thor Premium D-Sport (main image). It’s based on the standard Thor (yep), but gets lowered suspension and a muscly little bodykit. We all need a Thor in our lives.
