Autostrada Motore, the authorized distributor of Ferrari cars in the country, has officially presented the 458 Spider locally, three years after the car's public debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The 458 Spider is basically the 458 Italia with a fully retractable hardtop made entirely out of aluminum, giving it a number of advantages over a traditional folding soft-top, like a 25kg reduction in weight and a deployment time of just 14 seconds (or 12 seconds if the door windows are already down). Fully integrated into the styling of the car, the hardtop fits just ahead of the engine bay without compromising the car's aerodynamics or performance. The pair of buttresses on the rear deck was designed to optimize airflow to the engine intakes and the clutch, as well as to the gearbox oil radiators. An adjustable electric windstop located behind and between the seats ensures that a normal conversation can be held in the cabin even if the car is going over 200kph.
A naturally aspirated, direct-injection 4.5 liter V8 engine mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission with Formula 1-inspired paddle shifters, powers the 458 Spider, giving it 562hp and 540Nm.
Together with the 458 Italia and the 458 Speciale, the 458 Spider "widens the range of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined V8s and offers the same uncompromising technological solutions, handling and performance in a refined open-top configuration."
"It is with great honor that we formally present the 458 Spider to the Philippine market," said Autostrada Motore executive director Marc Soong. "In line with Maranello’s exclusive spider tradition, the 458 Spider guarantees maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down. Designed for the most discerning clients, the 458 Spider is truly worth the wait."
How much is this selling for? As usual, the distributor refuses to release its official pricing, probably advocating the adage: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." Just know this car is now available for ordering, period.
