Mazda has been nabbing awards left and right as of late, it seems. Just recently, it received a couple of Red Dot Awards for the CX-30 and MX-30. Now, the carmaker adds even more hardware to its trophy cabinet as it bags six Top Safety Pick+ awards for 2020.

The awards are given by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a non-profit organization that evaluates vehicles based on crashworthiness tests and frontal crash prevention, among other categories. According to the IIHS, the Japanese carmaker received the most awards for 2020 among all brands, a result that can be attributed to not only the Mazda vehicles’ performance in crash tests but also their standard safety features.

The US-spec Mazda models that were awarded the highest Top Safety Pick ratings were the 6, CX-5, CX-3, CX-30 (equipped with specific headlights), and CX-9 (models built after December 2019). Capping off the list is the 3—both its sedan and hatchback models.

Mazda vehicles are built with the brand’s safety philosophy, which it calls ‘Mazda Proactive Safety.’ Its models also come equipped with the i-Activsense range of advanced safety tech—which the IIHS finds offers topnotch preventive safety performance.

Mazda’s statement reads: “Mazda will continue research into and development of safety technologies that put people first so that customers can enjoy driving pleasure with greater peace of mind. We thereby aim to enrich customers’ lives and become a brand that has a special bond with them.”
