Mercedes-Benz has just beefed up its premium-SUV stable in the Philippines.
Auto Nation Group (ANG), the German luxury car manufacturer’s official local distributor, has just launched the new seven-seater GLE. The vehicle will be available here in just one variant: the GLE 300d 4Matic, which carries a cool P5,690,000 price tag.
At that price point, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE undercuts its fellow German and competitor, the all-new BMW X5, by P300,000.
There’s little doubt the vehicle’s a looker. Strong lines and muscular shoulders lend the new GLE an intimidating presence, complemented by a bold face featuring a large grille and an in-your-face Mercedes three-pointed star. The 21-inch five-spoke alloy wheels nicely round out the GLE’s overall look, too.
The macho exterior is a contrast to the GLE’s cabin, which is covered in premium brushed-aluminum trim and soft-touch materials. The highlight of the dashboard—perhaps even of the whole interior—is a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen display that, combined with the futuristic digital instrument cluster, gives off the impression that it spans the length of the dash.
Entertainment is coursed through a Burmester surround sound system, and fancy ambient lighting with 64 color options comes standard. There’s a wealth of convenience here, too, thanks to adaptive headlights, a wireless charger, blind-spot assist, rain-sensing wipers, and an automated tailgate just to name a few of the GLE’s extra features—and that’s on top of driver-centric toys like a 360-degree camera and active brake assist.
Underneath the hood of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d 4Matic is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with an output of 245hp and 500Nm arriving between 1,600 and 2,400rpm. This comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
“The new GLE is the result of generations of design and engineering, a powerful promise of trust and capability, with a strength of character that can only come from Mercedes-Benz—and this holds true for our entire SUV lineup,” ANG chief operating officer Francis Ang said during the SUV’s launch.
“Each of these new-generation SUVs are built on Mercedes-Benz’s strengths, making them just as strong as the people who drive them. While they make a powerful appearance, it is their inner strength that sets them apart.”
