Yes, you read that right. Indian cars may not have the most stellar reputation in our country, but an Indian-made model has just earned itself a five-star safety rating from the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP).

The Tata Nexon was given five stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child safety. On top of that, the Mahindra Marazzo was awarded four stars for adult protection and two stars in the child-safety department. Tata’s SUV now comes equipped with safety features like a seatbelt reminder, while the Mahindra gets standard double airbags and Isofix anchors.

“This is a huge landmark for car safety in India. Congratulations to Tata Motors for achieving India’s first five-star rating for adult occupant protection. Congratulations also to Mahindra for their first four-star result. The Nexon was engineered in India and this shows the huge capability of the domestic industry to achieve excellence in safety design and performance,” says Global NCAP secretary general David Ward.
