Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary Rogelio Singson has conducted an ocular inspection of the alternate routes to be used by private vehicles once the construction of the Araneta Avenue-Quezon Avenue Interchange Project begins next week. In preparation for the start of construction, though, both avenues will already be partially closed starting June 15.
"Motorists are advised to expect traffic buildup along Araneta Avenue and Quezon Avenue as government starts the construction of the 440 lineal meter underpass project this June to speed up traffic flow and reduce pollution load by lessening gas emissions during traffic gridlock," said Singson.
At a cost of P430 million, the project will see the construction of a four-lane underpass along Quezon Avenue, which will cross underneath Araneta Avenue. The project also includes the installation of submersible pumps to manage flooding in the area, the construction of reinforced concrete box and pipe culverts, the widening of the Mariblo Bridge along Quezon Avenue, and the improvement of the service roads and approaches to the intersection.
Expected to be completed in 450 calendar days, the project hopes to decongest the traffic along the two affected avenues as well as on EDSA and other nearby major thoroughfares.
To ensure that the flow of traffic will not be severely affected while construction on the project is ongoing, the DPWH Urban Roads Project Office, together with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Quezon City Government, has mapped out alternate routes.
For motorists from EDSA Quezon City going to Manila/Quiapo , the DPWH has identified 11 alternate routes. One alternative, if you're coming from EDSA, is via this route:
* Turn right on West Avenue;
* Turn left on Del Monte Avenue;
* Upon reaching A. Bonifacio Avenue, turn left;
* Turn right on Blumentritt;
* Take another left on Dimasalang; and
* Proceed all the way to Manila.
Motorists coming from Manila through España and going to different points along EDSA-Quezon City also have 11 identified route options, one of which is to:
* Turn right on E. Rodriguez Sr. coming from España;
* Proceed straight toward EDSA/Cubao Interchange;
* Turn left on EDSA/Quezon City.
Six routes have been identified for motorists coming from Sta. Mesa and Aurora Boulevard and passing through Araneta Avenue toward A. Bonifacio Avenue. One route is to:
* Turn left on Bayani or E. Rodriguez Avenue;
* Take a right on Banawe Street;
* Another right on Amoranto Street;
* Left on G. Araneta Avenue; and
* Proceed straight toward A. Bonifacio/North Luzon Expressway
