In June, we reported that RM Auctions would place under the gavel a 1968 Ford GT40 Gulf/Mirage Lightweight Racing Car with chassis number P/1074002E, and that the auction house refused to disclose its estimate as to how much the car would go for.
It can now be revealed that at the Monterey, California, auction last weekend, the GT40 was sold for $11 million (P464,274,000), setting a new world record for an American automobile sold at an auction.
The first, by serial number, of several lightweight GT40s built for J.W. Automotive and its sponsor, Gulf Oil, the car was completed in 1968 and carries a storied history. Finished in the Gulf team colors of Powder Blue with a Marigold stripe, it raced extensively throughout 1968 from Daytona to Le Mans and was even driven by Jacky Ickx at the Le Mans trials before it was sold to Solar Productions in 1970 and used in the making of Steve McQueen's 1971 racing film Le Mans as a camera car.
