After weeks of speculation, we finally have confirmation about the 2021 Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), and it’s not good news. The event’s organizers have officially announced that the next iteration of the show won’t take place until 2022.
The decision was made by the committee and council of Salon International de l’Automobile after a recent survey showed that many of this year’s exhibitors would prefer to skip the 2021 show and participate in 2022 instead. This move gives the involved parties some time to recover from the effects of this year’s health crisis. Plus, the organizers are doubtful the ongoing situation would allow an event with potentially half a million visitors and tens of thousands of journalists to push through next year.
Following this announcement, the foundation revealed that it rejected a loan from the Canton and State of Geneva, and likewise plans to sell the rights to organize GIMS along with the show’s assets to the owners of the Palexpo conference center. The Geneva Motor Show is one of the largest public events held in Switzerland. The 2020 edition, which was set to take place on March 5-15, was canceled in light of the global coronavirus outbreak.
