CAMPI mid-year report: Sales grow slightly compared to 2018

The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) numbers for the first half of 2019 are in…and it’s a mixed bag.

Industry sales are up by 1.46% compared to the same period in 2018, but a few segments have taken major hits when compared to numbers from last year: Passenger car sales are down by 6.4%, AUV sales are down by 42.9%, and category 5 trucks and buses are down by 42.2%. On the bright side, light commercial vehicle sales increased by 23.1%.

The country’s best-selling car brand for 2019 so far is Toyota Motor Philippines, with a whopping 73,454 units sold. This is followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines and Nissan Philippines with 31,210 and 21,060 unit sales, respectively. Ford Philippines (11,227 units) and Suzuki Philippines (10,817) round out CAMPI’s top five.

All in all, the figures show a total of 172,337 units sold among passenger car brands. Ever since the TRAIN law was implemented in 2018, auto industry growth has been challenged by higher vehicle prices and by the panic buying that occurred in 2017.

Keep in mind that numbers courtesy of the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID)—which keeps tabs on manufacturers including Hyundai, Subaru, and JAC—are not yet included in this report. We’ll have a separate story out containing industry totals from both AVID and CAMPI.
