Props to the car companies that have been donating money for the benefit of Yolanda victims. Some, like Chevrolet Philippines here, even come up with creative ways to help. Last night, at the launch dinner for this weekend\'s Motorama event in SM Mall of Asia, the American car brand\'s distributor held a somewhat impromptu auction among its guests--composed of dealers and journalists--to raise money for our ill-fated countrymen.
Our colleague James Deakin presided over the proceedings. We swear he has a fallback career as an auctioneer.
Among those auctioned were a lunch/dinner buffet at Spiral (Sofitel), two limited-edition Chevrolet Swatch watches, two tickets to the Manny Pacquiao fight viewing at Sofitel, two overnight stays in Sofitel\'s Superior Room, and one overnight stay in Sofitel\'s Imperial Suite (worth a reported P300,000).
Chevrolet Philippines president and managing director Atty. Albert Arcilla agreed to match whatever their guests bid on each item. In the end, the items fetched P70,500 for a total of P141,000 (including Chevrolet\'s corresponding donation).
Chevrolet has also allotted a spot at the Motorama venue (ice-skating rink of MOA) for a Philippine Red Cross booth so visitors may be able to give donations for the Yolanda victims.
God bless Chevrolet. May the brand\'s market share in the Philippines increase.
