Hyundai, like many other carmakers, is investing big in autonomous driving technologies. Now, the Korean manufacturer has announced that it pushed its self-driving tech a notch higher than before with its latest innovation.

The brand says it has developed the industry’s first Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML). The new technology integrates artificial intelligence (AI) with the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), and customizes the self-driving experience by incorporating the driver’s actual patterns into the autonomous driving behavior.

“The new SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features,” says Hyundai Motor Group vice president Woongjun Jang. “Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving.”

SCC-ML makes use of a machine learning algorithm to identify patterns in the driver’s behavior. The process begins with the vehicle’s front camera and radars constantly analyzing the driver’s habits behind the wheel and feeding it to the centralized computer. This computer then picks out relevant information from the data provided to identify the said driving patterns.

The driving patterns are categorized into three parts, namely: distance from preceding vehicles, acceleration, and responsiveness. It also takes driving conditions and speeds into consideration. Hyundai claims that the SCC-ML is highly flexible and adaptable, saying that the technology can distinguish over 10,000 different patterns. An example of such patterns includes how the driver maintains a short distance from the vehicle in front when driving slowly in urban spaces, while keeping a farther distance when driving at higher speeds along the highway.

The SCC-ML is also said to be programmed to avoid learning unsafe driving practices to increase its reliability and safety.
