Davao has found itself a new emergency-response vehicle in the form of the Tata Ace mini trucks. Dozens of units of the Ace were turned over to 53 barangays last January 25, during a ceremony attended by Davao mayor and tough-talking presidential aspirant Rodrigo Duterte.
Prior to this batch, 101 units of the same vehicle had already been distributed among the police stations of Davao City. The hope is that local government units will use these vehicles as part of their day-to-day operations during times of calamity. With a load capacity of up to 750kg and a good wading depth, these could come in very handy for transporting both emergency supplies and people in distress through flood-prone areas.
Last year, Atoy Llave of Atoy Customs converted the Ace MPV into the Rescue Boy first-responder vehicle, which he called a "six-in-one" means of transportation.
Let's hope LGUs and Davao City officials can keep these vehicles well-maintained and ready when the time comes.
