The Tokyo Auto Salon is going virtual for 2021

You might want to sit down for this if you already managed to buy tickets for the 2021 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Event management has announced the cancellation of this year’s physical Tokyo Auto Salon to give “priority to the safety of visitors, exhibitors, and related parties.” The move comes after the Japan Medical Association declared a medical emergency in the country. In a statement, the organizers shared that due to the continued spread of COVID-19 throughout Japan, “we decided that it is best not to hold this event.”

“We would like to express our sincere apologies to all those who have been looking forward to the Tokyo Auto Salon 2021 as it will be announced less than a month before the event,” management said, adding that all tickets that have already been purchased will be refunded.

Instead of the usual activities, the event is moving its displays online. Car lovers can access the show at the official Tokyo Auto Salon website starting January 15, 2021. The best part? The virtual showcase can be watched absolutely free of charge.

Frankly, this is the right move. Even with health and safety protocols in place, the number of people attending a car show as big as the Tokyo Auto Salon likely would have posed too big a risk.
