Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) closed the first half of 2011 with a stronghold in the light commercial vehicle segment with the popularity of its sports-utility vehicle and pickup truck.

"MMPC's strong performance in the light commercial category can be attributed to the strong demand and wide market acceptance for the Montero Sport and Strada, making them best sellers in the total midsize SUV and total double-cab pickup categories, respectively," Mitsubishi said in a statement.

Mitsubishi added that sales of the Montero Sport were up 3.7 percent at 6,408 units as of June. Strada sales grew three percent at 1,996 units in the past six months.

"Both models continue to attract more and more customers not only because of its combined appeal and superb performance brought about by the introduction of the variable geometry turbo technology but also the high value-for-money proposition it offers to customers especially with added technology enhancements such as the multi-information and multi-media system equipped on some of its variants," Mitsubishi said.

Mitsubishi Motor Philippines' total sales in June stood at 2,803 units as models like the Adventure and L300 also topped their respective segments.

Froilan Dytianquin, Mitsubishi vice president for marketing services, said the company could have sold more than 3,000 units in June if not for the heavy rains that dampened sales.

"Showroom traffic really dropped in the last weekend of June because of the weather," Dytianquin said.

For the rest of the year, Mitsubishi is confident sales will increase "with coming upgrades and additional variants to its core models."

"As MMC Japan and Thailand manufacturing plants are working on full capacity due to increasing global demand especially for the Montero Sport and Strada models, we shall exert full efforts to be able to serve the market requirements, which we anticipate to further pick up in the remaining months," Dytianquin said.
