MMDA opens first of several planned roundabouts

Will it really solve the traffic in Baclaran?
Feb 6, 2011 Philippine Car News - MMDA opens first of several planned roundabouts

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has completed the first of several roundabouts, which are expected to help ease traffic in the metropolis.

The new roundabout is located at the corner of Redemptorist Street and Roxas Boulevard Service Road in Baclaran, Parañaque City. It has a 14-meter diameter and construction was completed in only two weeks.

"The roundabout improved the visual layout of the Baclaran area and has eased traffic congestion which has been a long time problem," said MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino.

Neomie Recio, head of the agency's Traffic Engineering Center also noted that traffic in the area has become much faster, with a maximum travel speed of 26.9kph since the roundabout became operational.

Prior to its construction, simulation studies conducted by TEC engineers showed there would be a 209-percent increase in travel speed at the area once the roundabout is put in place. The area has also been declared a no-parking zone to ensure that the traffic will remain free-flowing and unobstructed.

Another roundabout is reportedly being constructed at the intersection of Redemptorist- Quirino Avenue-FB Harrison at the end of the Light Rail Transit 1 although the proliferation of illegal vendors in the area is hampering its construction. According to Recio, the illegal vendors should be removed first to give way for a bigger roundabout.
