It looks like the government isn’t done naming roads after former President Corazon Aquino. After a Congress committee approved a plan to rename the North Luzon Expressway to President Corazon Aquino Expressway, the Department of Public Works and Highway has announced that it’s also planning to name a boulevard in Region 5 after the former head of state.
"We are currently implementing the construction and improvement of a newly converted national road, the President Cory Aquino Boulevard, which will serve as an access road to various tourism destinations in the province of Camarines Norte," said DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson.
The boulevard reportedly covers the area declared by the Department of Tourism as a tourism destination since it is adjacent to the shores of Bagasbas Beach in Daet, supposedly the province’s surfing and kiting spot, and has a wide boardwalk that will serve as a viewing deck for visitors. When completed, the President Cory Aquino Boulevard will also lead local and foreign tourists to Calaguas Island in the town of Vinzons, the number one beach destination in Camarines Norte, and to the town of Mercedes, which is known as the “Fish Bowl Capital” of Bicol.
Measuring approximately 8.7km between Daet and Talisay in Camarines Norte, the President Cory Aquino Boulevard will be “the longest boulevard in the country when competed.” To date, the DPWH has finished 5.017km of the project.
Was naming this boulevard after the incumbent President's mother a device to expedite the project's budget approval? Just asking.
