Bikes have proven to be very useful under the Metro Manila quarantine. If you live, work, or simply need to pass through San Juan, then take note: Mayor Francis Zamora has announced that bike lanes will likely be a fixture in post-pandemic life in the city. Pop-up bike lanes along the city's major roadsspanning a total of around 15kmofficially launched today on World Bicycle Day.

The first phase of the pop-up bike lanes will stretch from N. Domingo Street to Ortigas Avenue, ending right before Connecticut Street. This route will make sure frontliners on bikes are protected as they make their way to major spots such as the San Juan Medical Center, the San Juan City Hall, Greenhills Shopping Center, and Cardinal Santos Medical Center.

The city government is also planning an expansion spanning 13.8km. Once in place, folks can bike pretty much all the way from Pasig River to the Santolan-Annapolis train station without having to pass through EDSA.

The trial run of the first phase was set up on May 31 to prepare for the influx of commuters at the onset of the general community quarantine.

“It does not only enable the public to observe social distancing, it is also a sustainable and environment-friendly mode of transportation that promotes an active lifestyle,” said Zamora.

Tricycles have been allowed to operate in San Juan City, added the mayor. Bike lanes will be another option for getting around the area while under quarantine.
