Someday, traveling from Balintawak to Santa Mesa will take 30 minutes instead of two hours.
In an effort to cut down motorists\' travel time from North Luzon to South Luzon, the Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corporation (MPTDC) and the Philippine National Construction Corporation (PNCC) have inked a joint-venture agreement that gives the Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC) the go signal to build the latest component of the NLEX Metro Expressway Link Project, dubbed \"Connector Road\" or Segment 10.2.
Also known as the NLEX-SLEX link, the NLEX Metro Expressway Link Project comprises the Harbor Link and the Connector Road. The latter is an 8km, four-lane elevated expressway that aims to connect C-3 Road in Caloocan to PUP Santa Mesa in Manila. It will have four interchanges: C-3 Road in Caloocan; R10 in Manila; Espana, Manila; and Santa Mesa, Manila. Construction of Segment 10.2, which costs P18 billion, will start in July 2014. It is expected to be completed by June 2016.
The other component of the project, called Harbor Link, consists of Segment 9 and Segment 10.1. The former is a 2.42km, four-lane road that connects the existing SMART Connect Interchange to MacArthur Highway. Construction of Segment 9 started in May 2013. This project, which costs P1.59 billion, is expected to be completed by June 2014. By July 2014, Segment 9 is expected to be open to tolling.
Segment 10.1, on the other hand, is a P10.5-billion 5.65km, four-lane stretch of road from MacArthur Highway to C-3 Road. Construction is set to start in March 2014, and expected to be completed by February 2016.
\"The interconnection is designed to enable travelers to virtually breeze through the metropolis, avoiding in the process high-density areas marked by perennial traffic jams,\" said MPTDC president and CEO Ramon Fernandez. \"This urban expressway is also designed to improve the transportation of goods to and from the harbor as cargo trucks can now move in and out without worrying about the truck ban.\"
