Yes, you can bike outdoors for exercise despite the Greater Manila Area being under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) made this clear enough on social media last week.
A clarification needs to be made, though, after reports started surfacing saying that cyclists were being apprehended from 6am to 9am, which are the allowed hours for exercising outdoors. The last thing anyone wants is to be hauled away by authorities for simply riding out to break a sweat before being cooped inside the house all day.
There are basically just four things you need to keep in mind if you plan on biking outdoors to exercise:
- Outdoor exercise is only permitted from 6am to 9am.
- You can only ride or exercise outdoors within your own barangay.
- You must wear a face mask.
- You must follow physical-distancing guidelines.
While biking outdoors is allowed, the agency stresses that it is encouraging everyone to find ways to exercise in the safety of their own homes. But the rules above are pretty straightforward, agree?
Frankly, all this confusion just shows there’s a disconnect between those in charge and those responsible for actually implementing these rules on the ground. Stick to these guidelines and you should be in the clear.
