If there’s one thing we can appreciate from what’s transpired over the past two months, it’s that cyclists—a sector that has for too long been an afterthought in the grand scheme of our country’s transportation landscape—are finally getting the attention they deserve.

Senate Committee on Public Services chair Senator Grace Poe, who authored the proposed Bicycle-Friendly Communities Act of 2019, has asked the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to include bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in its budget amid restrictions on pubic-transportation alternatives during Metro Manila’s modified enhanced community quarantine period (MECQ).

Marami sa ating mga kababayan ang nagbibisikleta na para lamang makapasok sa trabaho sa gitna ng pandemya. Ang kanilang pagtitiyaga ay suklian natin ng karampatang proteksyon,” the senator said in a statement, adding this is an opportunity to make cities “more bikeable and walkable, and thus more livable.”

“This is an important step in our bicycle-friendly path to inclusive growth. We should build segregated and covered bicycle lanes to ensure the safety and convenience of our riders,” she stressed.

The move comes just one week after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) shared plans to turn the outermost lane of EDSA into a dedicated bicycle lane.

Ang plano din ay ang target, magkakaroon ng bike lane malapit sa mga bangketa. Ito ang ginagawa ng [DOTr]; nakasuporta ang MMDA diyan sa side ng enforcement,” MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said.

The proposal has already been sent to DOTr head Arthur Tugade for consideration. Do you agree that it’s about time cyclists and pedestrians are given more consideration when it comes to budget allocation? Let us know in the comments.
