Let’s face it: Commuting in the metro isn’t fun. Actually, it hasn’t been for several years now. And amid this pandemic, things have arguably gotten far worse than ever.

That said, there’s still a lot that we commuters can look forward to in the coming years, such as the big-ticket railway projects that the government has lined up. In fact, we’re expecting to see some drastic improvements real soon, especially since the Department of Transportation (DOTr) recently said that it is eyeing the partial operations of all of its major railway infrastructure projects by 2022.

According to the Philippine National Railways (PNR), PNR Clark Phase 1 is currently at 43% completion and will be partially operational by the fourth quarter of this year. Full operations are slated to begin in 2024.

The LRT-1 Extension Project is also slated for partial operability by this year. As for the LRT-2 East Extension project, it is already scheduled for inauguration on April 26, 2021. The latter is 96.29% complete as of this writing.

Then, as per DOTr undersecretary for railways TJ Batan, the MRT-7 will be partially opened in 2021 as well—target date for full operations is in December 2022. Batan also shared that the tunnel boring for the Metro Manila Subway Project will begin in the third quarter of this year.

We understand there’s still a ways to go before we see even just one of these finally materialize, but it still has a lot of us commuters excited about the future. Fingers crossed, the pandemic will finally be over once these trains become operational.
