No Easytrip RFID yet? Head to the bigger activation sites, advises the MPTC

The pop-up installation booths tend to get very crowded

The Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) is advising motorists to avail themselves of Easytrip RFID stickers at designated venues aside from the off-site installation booths, which are prone to overcrowding due to the huge influx of applicants. Arlette Capistrano, MPT South assistant vice president, says that this is to safeguard the welfare of customers and employees alike against possible virus infection.

Over the weekend, officials of Barangay Magallanes in Makati City ordered the closure of the Easytrip and Autosweep booths at the Shell station outside Magallanes Village after residents complained of a traffic jam and a possible violation of health protocols. This prompted MPTC representatives to hold a dialogue with barangay leaders.

Initially, the barangay officials agreed to the resumption of RFID sticker activation, but only for the residents. MPTC, however, is confident they will allow other motorists to avail themselves of RFID stickers there, too. “Nagkausap na kami. Nagkasundo kami na mahigpit na ipatupad ang health protocols and, at the same time, ayusin ang traffic flow para hindi maapektuhan ang mga residente sa lugar,” says Capistrano.

Capistrano assured the barangay officials that Easytrip RFID assist teams are not only instructed to follow the strict COVID-19 health protocols, but have also been trained to maintain order and manage traffic at their stations. It turns out that some applicants got restless while waiting for their turn. As a result, they ignored the number queuing system and loitered around the kiosks instead of staying in their cars while waiting to be served.

“The installation time normally takes seven to 10 minutes. Tumatagal lang kung ipinipilit ng applicant na ilagay ang RFID sticker sa ibang parte ng sasakyan, lalo na kung may tint ang windshield nila,” Capistrano explains. When it’s raining, RFID installation on headlights also takes longer because the surface has to be completely dry before the sticker is affixed.

Capistrano is appealing to motorists to let the installers do their job because they know where the Easytrip RFID stickers can be read effectively by the sensors at toll plazas.

To ease congestion at off-site installation booths, she is also advising applicants to proceed to bigger activation sites that have wide parking areas, more sticker installers, and much bigger RFID tag allocations. These are located at Land Transportation Office (LTO) offices and permanent Easytrip customer service offices usually found at the entry and exit points of MPTC-owned tollways. Some of these permanent installation centers are open 24/7.

So far, there are almost one million Easytrip RFID subscribers, and MPTC is anticipating a surge of applicants as November 2, the first day that fully cashless tollway payments will be implemented, is fast approaching. “The deadline stays,” Capistrano says.
