If one congressman has his way, motorcycle owners might not be affected by a potential motor vehicle user’s charge (MVUC) increase.

According to a recent report by the Philippine Star, Albay Representative Joey Salceda plans to submit a proposal which would see motorcycle owners exempted from a possible MVUC increase. His reasoning? The sheer number of riders who will be affected by a tax hike.

“I will propose that we exempt motorcycle owners. There are seven million of them,” Salceda said, adding he wishes that a tax hike will only be imposed on car owners as they would have an easier time paying for it. Salceda estimates there are currently about four million owners of four-wheeled vehicles in the Philippines.

Salceda also confirmed that the Ways and Means Committee, which he chairs, has already received the MVUC increase proposal drafted by the Philippine Department of Finance (DOF). The MVUC is also commonly referred to as the road user’s tax.

Reports that a substantial MVUC increase is looming have been coming out as early as last year. Could its implementation be just around the corner? And if the answer is yes, are you in favor of Salceda’s proposal to exempt motorbikes? Let us know in the comments.
