Today marks the first day of higher penalties for illegal-parking violations. Attended cars will now be fined over triple the previous amount, while the fine for unattended vehicles has increased fourfold. The fine for obstruction has jumped from P150 to P1,000, too. The changes were announced by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) online last night, and, fittingly enough, the agency just released its 2018 no-contact apprehension tally this morning. This includes illegal parking violations.

In 2018, a total of 25,469 illegal-parking incidents were caught via CCTV or other forms of no-contact apprehension. The tally for obstruction violations is even higher at 28,683 incidents. And to think the MMDA’s data doesn’t even include the month of December yet.

Those numbers are enough to warrant the two violations a place on the MMDA’s list of top traffic violations in 2018. They’re a far cry from first place—Yellow Lane violations with 289,154—but it still isn’t a good look for the state of Metro Manila’s parking situation.

The past year saw some very public illegal-parking crackdowns by the MMDA. Will the agency do more of the same in 2019? It shouldn’t be too long until we find out.
