Man, talk about bad luck. A fire broke out at the Santolan Station of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) earlier today, and this has forced the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) to halt the train line’s operations.

Multiple reports state that the fire erupted in the electrical room of the station around 5:30am. According to the LRTA’s announcement, this was caused by a burnt UPS (uninterruptible power supply). It said that authorities are still investigating the matter as of this writing. As mentioned, operations will be suspended, but the LRTA has assured that the trains will be back up and running as soon as it has verified that no other equipment was affected by the incident. You can check out the agency’s official statement below:

Just a little over a year ago, a fire took place between the train line’s Katipunan and Anonas stations. Take note that the LRTA said back then that the repairs could take at least nine months. There’s no telling now how this incident will affect the ongoing repairs and how much it’ll set the current progress back.

In any case, we just hope the LRTA can resume partial operations of the LRT-2 as soon as possible just like it did last year, because we all know how extremely difficult life has been for commuters throughout this COVID-19 pandemic. With limited public transport operations—and not to mention this entire automatic fare collection system fiasco with the Department of Transportation—one less mode of transport is definitely something they don’t need right now.

What say you, readers? How has this affected your commute today? Also, how have you coped with the situation? Share them in the comments. Stay safe out there, guys.
