Here’s your dose of nostalgia for the day: To liven up Metro Manila’s streets for the Christmas season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has collaborated with Walt Disney Philippines in a project called ‘Mickey Lights Up Manila.’
In celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th anniversary, 90 of Metro Manila’s traffic lights are now decorated with Mickey Mouse ears for the holidays. This collaboration aims to bring back the memories and smiles that the iconic Disney character has brought to millions of Filipinos across different generations.
MMDA chairman Danny Lim says: “The Mickey ear traffic lights relive the Mickey legacy of fun and laughter, bringing out the child in all of us as we reminisce the joy that Mickey once brought in our lives when we were young.”
Chairman Lim also hopes that these lights can bring some simple traffic relief to motorists and commuters, especially since gridlock is expected to become even more dense as the holidays come closer. (Click here to read up on how to deal with holiday-season traffic.)
These special traffic lights can be seen across key cities in Metro Manila, namely: Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Quezon City, and San Juan.
“Mickey is an icon of fun, laughter, and optimism, and is one of the most enduring personalities for all ages. We feel privileged to be able to share a smile and spread happiness through Mickey to all Filipino kids and families during this festive season across Manila,” says Veronica Cabalinan, head of Walt Disney Philippines.
Happy 90th birthday, Mickey!
